Part 16
A Flash of Pain

Colby watched as Charlie scribbled frantically on a chalk board. It was one of about a dozen. There were even boards attached to the ceiling of the garage.

“Charlie, you’ve got to come eat.”

“I need to finish this thought. The DoD…”

“I though you we’re working for the NSA?”

“That’s the other boards. This is DoD, NSA is on the ceiling, CDC is all the whiteboards, FBI is up in the solarium, NASA is in the white notebooks, Homeland Security is on the yellow legal pads, super gravity and Cognitive Emergence are at the office.”

Colby raked his hand through his hair a couple of times as Charlie tried to desperately finish whatever thought was in his head. “Charlie, what the hell are you doing?”

“My… patriotic duty.”

“Bull. You’re keeping something from me and if it’s classified just say so, but even you don’t try to juggle six projects like this at once.”

Charlie stopped and let out a long sigh. “It’s… it’s not classified but I can’t tell you.”

“It’s not a bad secret… it’s… it’s kinda a good thing… and… and you’ll get told eventually but… I just… there’s going to be a drain on my assets and I needed to pick up a little extra work and this is all stuff they’ve been wanting me to do for ages.”

“Is this about that check you wrote Don last month?” Charlie whipped around from the board. “I balance your check book, remember?”

“Oh. Right… um, yeah it’s about that.” Charlie went back to the equation.

“Look, if Don’s in trouble, I mean he’s been behaving like… well… an asshole for a couple of months now.”

“No, he’s not in trouble. It’s a good thing that’s happening, it’s just…” Charlie leaned his head on the blackboard. “Look, I just can’t tell you right now… soon...about a month. I promise.”

Colby nodded. “Okay. A month?”

“Yeah.” Colby watched as Charlie wrote out a chunk of math then stopped and looked at the ceiling then at the whiteboard. He started again, then stopped “Shit.” He erased the bottom line and went to begin yet again. Charlie took a few deep breaths. “Colby,” he said weakly.

“Yeah, I can tell. How scrabbled is your head?”

“I just… They’re all bleeding into each other. I just… I just need to be able to focus a little.”

“Go back to my place?”

Charlie shook his head. “I can’t, I’ve got to…” He waved randomly at the boards.

“Come upstairs then.”

“We… Dad’s in the house.”

Colby nodded. “I know. Come upstairs, I’ve got an idea.”

Charlie put down the chalk and followed as Colby headed upstairs. Colby felt a knot twist in his stomach at what he was about to try. Not so much putting Charlie into pain. A couple years of sitting with Charlie in therapy had gotten him mostly over that bit, but now Colby was about to do something to the person he loved that he’d been taught to do on enemies.

“Get undressed, lay on the floor, put your arms over your head.” Colby watched as Charlie quickly stripped. He was only half hard, probably too tired for this to be about sex.

“Do you think you can be quiet?” Colby asked. Charlie grabbed a reasonably clean t-shirt that had gotten shoved under the bed and shoved it in his mouth.

Colby sighed. “Okay, if this is too much I need you to tell me, okay?” Charlie nodded. “Okay.”

Colby took a deep breath. If this worked it could actually save both him and Charlie a lot of problems in the long run. Colby ran his hands down Charlie’s body a few times then placed his thumb at just the right point under Charlie’s arm and pushed.

Charlie let out a muffled yell and his body arched. Colby yanked his hand away. Charlie took long breaths through his nose. “Are you okay?” Charlie nodded his head. “Want me to keep going?” Charlie nodded vigorously.

Colby sighed internally. ‘Well that answers that question.’

Colby found another spot under Charlie’s collar bone and two along his ribs. He never held any spot for longer than a split second. The same amount of time it would take a leather strap to crack across his flesh, but this time no bruises, no welts, no marks.

Colby kept a close eye on Charlie’s face. He could watch Charlie drift away in the moments after the sharp flash of pain. As much as Colby hated to admit it, he’d gotten good at reading this side of Charlie. He had to, for both their sakes. He could tell when Charlie was at that point between regaining focus and when all the numbers were on the verge of being blown out of his head. He knew Charlie in this moment would want complete oblivion from the numbers but the Charlie with six projects downstairs would be a little cranky about it.

Colby pressed one last time under Charlie’s arm and held it for a second. Charlie arched his body like he was being hit with electricity. Colby pulled his hand away and Charlie collapsed his eyes fluttering shut.

“Okay. That’s enough for now.”

Charlie took the t-shirt out of his mouth. His head lulled to the side and he blinked a few times.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” Charlie gave a weak smile. “Wow.” Charlie took Colby’s hand and pressed it to his lips. “Thank you.”

Colby stroked Charlie’s face. “Do you know what I would give for the inside of your head to function normally?”

“Probably the same amount I would give.”

“And then some.”

Charlie sighed. “I’m sorry.”

Colby shrugged. “You are as god made you.”

Charlie leveled a look at Colby. “What a bastard.”

Short, yes, but I think it was well-placed. It breaks my heart that Don put such a burden on Charlie. I s'pose it couldn't be helped, though.

Nice touch with the pressure points. I like how it touches upon Colby's military background. Very plausible. <3

Thanks for posting this so early! I had a *really really really* bad morning, so it helped a lot.

Glad I could perk up your morning a bit. I hope it gets better *hug*

So Charlie wasn't entirely honest with Don that he could spare the money. It must be driving him nuts to have to keep the secret.

Colby using military interrogation techniques on Charlie. Poor Colby.

Colby shrugged. “You are as god made you.”

Charlie leveled a look at Colby. “What a bastard.”

Colby tossed back a comment Charlie made to him in your previous story. Very appropriate.
ladygray99ladygray99 on December 5th, 2008 06:36 pm (UTC)
Well he can spare the money but he's calculated absolute worst case scenario medical bills and wants to make sure that he wont be caught short. plus he wants to make sure Don can take extra time off work if need be. Don having a kid means he doesn't have to so he wants to make sure every possible thing is covered.

Oh, OW. But I love the simplicity of this solution, it shows a lot about how Colby thinks and his background -- he WILL find a workaround, if it is important. And his comments showing how much this still hurts him, even if he is used to it. *pets Colby*

I'm sure Don is a walking, talking son of a bitch right now, with worry. I have to say that if Don were my friend, I'd tell him he's making a mistake by not telling Alan what's up. I know he wants to spare his father the devastation that would result with the loss of the child, but Don is Alan's child and I think he would want the opportunity to support Don (and Anne) through this stressful time. He's not going to take well to be shut out of the role of supporter. But like Don would listen??? Right. *sighhhhh*

Awesome, insightful chapter. Thanks!

Enter Don and his all singing all dancing marter/hero complex.

Yes Don's being an idiot but it'll all come out soon. like tomorrow.

The things we do for family and the ones we love. I only wish that Don had maybe confided in Colby, so he could kinda act as a buffer at work for him. But hey, I'm sure it will all work out in the end.

Patiently waiting for more and the newest member of the Eppes family :-)
ladygray99ladygray99 on December 5th, 2008 06:53 pm (UTC)
of course it'll work out. :-)
ninou1ninou1 on December 5th, 2008 06:54 pm (UTC)
Love the last line!

And yeah, Don could easily take the support. All his Dad want is him being happy. They're not made of sugar, so go Don!
ladygray99ladygray99 on December 5th, 2008 06:55 pm (UTC)
"They're not made of sugar"

That's a great phrase. Sort of like "they're not made of glass"

This is excellent as we learn more about Charlie and how many agencies he works for:I need to finish this thought. The DoD…” “I though you we’re working for the NSA?”
“That’s the other boards. This is DoD, NSA is on the ceiling, CDC is all the whiteboards, FBI is up in the solarium, NASA is in the white notebooks, Homeland Security is on the yellow legal pads, super gravity and Cognitive Emergence are at the office.” and Colby's worries. Good as Colby finds a way to help Charlie without leaving any marks. Leaving marks seems to be one of the things that upsets Colby the most about the balance they have worked out.
ladygray99ladygray99 on December 6th, 2008 06:19 pm (UTC)
Colby's worried that with too many marks and someone's going to hull him in on domestic abuse charges.

If I had a trainer as hot as Colby I might actually go to the gym. ;-)

And there's a lot of suff where Charlie has to say, 'sorry hun, it's classified.'

Reminds me of those jujitsu classes I took... The pain is really sharp but doesn't last long. Never thought of it as being cathartic though. Maybe didn't have it done to me for a long enough time...
ladygray99ladygray99 on December 7th, 2008 06:59 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't try it myself. I have rarely found pain cathartic. Usually it just hurts.

Clever Colby :)

I do love that the math genius has his boyfriend balance the checkbook.

I knew a guy who worked for NASA, he could never figure out how to work the microwave. :)

Well, sorta.

So, did Charlie really give Don a bit more money than he could comfortably afford, or is the multi-tasking purely down to the stress of being the only person Don's told, the only person giving Don support? I'd guess the second option.

I'm glad Colby found a suitable technique for bringing Charlie down a little while Alan's in the house. It was a nice link back to his military training, which we never hear much about on the show or in fic. I could see why he hadn't used it before though; it's a bit of a mental jump to perform to use a technique for subduing enemies on his lover.

ladygray99ladygray99 on January 17th, 2009 07:13 pm (UTC)
Charlie could afford what he gave Don but not by much. He also started calculating the cost of worst case scenario medical options and threw on top med school tuition with 18 years of inflation.

"Colby shrugged. “You are as god made you.”"

I liked that dialogue so much from the Leacroft fallout. I appreciate Colby remembering it, and Charlie's riposte. Though their discussion here raises the question...if a genie offered to fix Charlie's head by reducing his mental ability to that of an average tenured professor of mathematics, would Charlie take the deal? I doubt it.
ladygray99ladygray99 on November 27th, 2012 02:27 pm (UTC)
I read a fic ages ago about a high school aged Charlie trying to work out a drug combination that would give him brain damage but not kill him that way Don would like him. Don stops him just before he takes the drugs.

I think there are plenty of times in this Charlie's life where he would have given anything to be normal but as he becomes more comfortable with himself he has an easier time claiming his genius as his own.
