Next two are in beta one after that is being written. It's up to 70 pages and I'm only maybe a fifth done so don't hold your breath on that one coming up soon but I'm glad you liked it.

Wow. Just wow.

*has been sitting at her computer for the past fifteen minutes, trying to regain some semblance of coherency*

This is just... amazing. I was initially going to post a comment to each part, but then I got so hooked I just couldn't stop reading, even to squee. *looks sheepish*

I'll be honest with you- I'm not much fan of BDSM except in PWPs, because it tends to be either horifically OOC or just mindless porn, but this? This is dark and brutal and honest and just so REAL it makes me want to cry. I adore how you've chosen to push the boundaries rather than take the usual path of it just being fun and games, and yet, you've made the BDSM just a part of Charlie and Colby's love story and not the story itself. Brava.

Your characterisation here was just amazing- I could *see* David, Dylan, Rob and Judd in my head, almost like this was an actual episode. You've nailed their voices perfectly, as well as their dynamic with each other. I especially adore your Colby- you've done a brilliant job of portraying his disgust/misery/fascination, and that conversation with Don in Sing My Body Electric was a work of art. Also, major points for actually making Dr. Goldman and Bradford interesting 3D characters. I want them for my doctor and shrink!

My favourite part about this verse, though, is that while this is an undeniably dark story, you've managed to infuse it with humour and passion and just plain fun- I must have laughed out loud at least three times over the line about Colby not knowing that he had mustard until Charlie ate it , and the office rumour mill made me fall out of my chair. CalSci brainwashing experiment indeed. *still giggling*

BTW, I noticed you mentioned needing a beta on account of SPAG issues. If you want, I'd be happy to help- I'm a journalism major and being anal-retentive about crap like that is my job, so it'll be nice to put it to fun use for a change. *grins* If you're interested, let me know!

"I could *see* David, Dylan, Rob and Judd in my head, almost like this was an actual episode."
That would be one heck of an episode. I'm glad I could get the voices right for you. That's always my bench mark for writing dialog, what does it sound like in the actors voice?
And as always I'm very honored that you were willing to tackle a story that normally you'd avoid. I avoid a lot of BDSM stories for many of the same reasons.
Also glad I could give you a laugh.
I'll keep you in mind for a beta for the next story. it however has stalled out at about 58,000 words and 131 pages. *sigh* I'm working on it though.
Slowly
Very slowly.
It's going to be a kinda heavy Don story really. I got the boys to a reasonably happy place in the last three so I'm kicking Don down the Whitman 'verse rabbit hole for a little stress and misery. *eg*

This was with out a doubt a master piece. This should get you that price next time round I'll be there voting for you. Roses (in danish = praise) for you supreme master of words :)

:-) Ah thank you. Hopefully the next installment should be up by next year (it's running kinda long) and it should blow the first three out of the water

"Sing My Body Electric"
I stayed up way too late last night reading your stories, and spent more time than I should at work today writing this instead of, well, working... I don't actually know how to write prose or poetry, so please take this only so far as a token of my love and appreciation for your story:

"Sing My Body Electric"

The morning mist skipping on water,
So many shadows across the light.
My lonely soul counting by the music,
Haunted ghosts in the night.

Where the tears have dried,
With so much silent pleading.
I cannot cry,
For the release I am seeking.

My spirit will keep on drifting,
Without your offered hand,
I know you too are hurting,
But I trust you to understand.

“Sing my body electric”,
This is all meant to be,
You are my safe harbor,
When I am lost at sea.

“Sing my body electric”,
Make me shiver with desire,
Burn me with your passion,
And light me all afire.

“Sing my body electric”,
Give me the blinding pain,
Take me to another dimension,
Where all that’s left is your name.

Take it away, all away,
Take me to where the angels sing,
Make me stay, to stay,
So I can keep on believing.

Hold me close, real close,
Till I can feel your breathing,
Kiss me gently, oh so gently,
Your taste is all I am chasing.

Find me, hurt me, hold me, save me,
Drown me in that mesmerizing feeling.
Bind me, bleed me, claim me, take me,
You are all that I’ve been pursuing.

Through your eyes I can see my salvation,
Another step and I am nearer to my completion,
Close to you I am free from all my apprehension,
In your arms I will find my life’s actualization.

You are my greatest gift,
My most coveted treasure,
My secret strength,
My constant protector,
And I will have no more want,
Every minute we are together.
Your love sets me free,
And I am yours forever.

PS. Can people really get into the position you described in Chapter 8? I actually tried it, and there was no way I could bring my elbows together :P

Re: "Sing My Body Electric"
Wow. Thank you sooooooo much. I hope the next part will be able to inspire such praise as this.

And yes you actually can get your elbows together if you bend them a bit and have a very flexible upper torso. Managed it once.

*comes up for air* There are very few fanfic series that I consider good enough to marathon read. Whitman is one of them. I just spent the past two days completely buried in this universe, and frankly, I think it should/could be canon. This is so very intense, and I love the way the characters interact. Well done, and I eagerly look forward to the next part.
ladygray99ladygray99 on January 20th, 2009 10:46 pm (UTC)
Well take a deep breath. that's one heck of a marathon. Even I have a hard time reading strait through and I wrote the damn thing. Not sure when the next part will happen probubly next xmas but I'm glad you enjoyed what's here.

Whitman 'verse.
WOW
I have just spent the last week reading my way through this, it is compelling and totally convincing.
I love these characters and it has forever changed the way I watch the TV series.
Are you still writing, do you post as you go along or wait till you have finished. Please please dont tell me you have moved on to something else.
ladygray99ladygray99 on February 25th, 2009 06:05 am (UTC)
Re: Whitman 'verse.
I never post WIPs. The last story here took me a year to write. the next one will probably take a little longer. I'm actually taking a couple of months off it to focus on trying to write professionally but there are still plans to continue this 'verse. I'm glad you liked it and thank you for reading.
divafitsdivafits on March 9th, 2009 09:18 pm (UTC)
I just spent a wonderful Saturday and Sunday powering my way through all of your Numb3rs fic. This was wonderful and powerful and I can't wait to see what comes next.
ladygray99ladygray99 on March 9th, 2009 09:21 pm (UTC)
woah. That's a serious read. The next big post will probubly come in a month or two. It'll be 40 extra drabbles to add to the silk pillow drabble series. I'm glad you liked this.
princessofduskprincessofdusk on July 22nd, 2009 01:00 pm (UTC)
This has to be the 5th time I've read all the Whitman 'Verse in one sitting since I discovered it, I only just realised, to my shame, that I had not yet commented. First thing to say is something I'm sure you've heard time and time again, wow!

Your characterisations are amazingly realistic and the writing brings the world to life. The way you show Charlie's genius and the twists in his brain are particularly impressive - something that unique and out of the realms of most people's personal experience is hard to write with sympathy, particularly in a way that makes it understandable to your readers, you manage it with flair. Your OCs and peripheral characters are also well done - you give us an understanding of them and their stories succinctly yet effectively.

The development of your characters is also impressive - I like how you've shown, in particular, Charlie, Colby and Don's growth, changing emotions and the effect of their relationships and personal experiences, on the way they have changed throughout the series. A particular favourite for me is something you show with most clarity, and some very erotic writing, in Chapter 34 of 'A Woman Waits for Me', when Charlie is dominating the lap dancer. It would have been altogether too easy to keep seeing Charlie as a purely submissive masochist, totally enthralled in service to his beefy Fed partner, instead, you've managed to show the depths of his complexity, and I look forward to seeing more about his dominating side in part 5.

In terms of plot, I love how you allow events to unfurl slowly, as opposed to throwing in as much drama in as short a time as possible. The way in which you show the effects of the events on your characters is particularly interesting, as it gives us more insights in to what makes particular people tick. My favourite part of the plot, and something I am eagerly anticipating hearing more about, is the evolution of Charlie's work, in some ways, I feel you've actually shown that more realistically than the show does! I have a feeling that in part 5, he's going to be getting up to some very interesting stuff in conjunction with the government, and maybe the military.

Anyway, this is getting kind of long, so I'll just reiterate that I look forward to reading more of this in the future and that I think you've done a great job.

Well thank you very kindly. A lot of work has gone into Whitman over the last couple of years and it's nice to know that people are enjoying it and even re reading it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the plotting. I do try to make sure my stories flow and the characters have motivation for their actions. Part 5 is in the works but I must confess it is behind schedule. All the bunnies that got pushed aside for part 4 formed a cooperative and demanded attention. Still please keep reading and thank you for your lovely comment.

Whitman
I can't tell you how much I enjoy this story. I've read it several times and love it more each time. It was the first story I put on my kindle. Thank you for all your effort. I am waiting (im)patiently for more. D'Ree

Re: Whitman
Well thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The next Whitman is being worked on but I'm afraid to say it's only about 30 pages in right now but those 30 pages came in the last week as apposed to the none in the last six months so progress is happening. Watch this space.

I turned away from fanfic and fandom in general several years back, on returning to see if my memories had distorted the reality of the online world I found this series and it has singlehandedly restored my faith in the internet.

While 99% of fanfic fails to do more than offer an audience to squealing fangirl wannabe writers (I'm not being pretentious, I'm being honest, I was one of those writers once), fics such as The Whitman 'Verse completely outshine the drivel that is out there and remind us what real talent is.

This is one of only two stories (online or published) I've read that offer an honest look at the compulsions that can lead to a true D/s relationship, and the only example I've ever found of a story that gets to the heart of illnesses such as bipolar disorder and depression- and they're not even the point of the overall story and are mentioned only in passing.

I only have two regrets- one, that since reading this I find cannon incredibly unsatisfactory and have therefore reread the entire saga several times, and two, that I long ago deleted my Livejournal account so can only offer an anonymous review.

You are an incredibly talented writer and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours- while I am wholeheartedly among those waiting eagerly for the next part of this series, I know that whatever you choose to turn your pen to will turn to gold.

Best wishs,

Amy
ladygray99ladygray99 on August 6th, 2009 03:36 am (UTC)
Well thank you for those kind words. I'm always glad to hear my work gets reread value.

It seems as if this work has suddenly been discovered by new people out of the blue. Always a nice feeling.

Just so you (and everyone else) knows Whitman 5 has finally gotten off the ground. Nothing close to an ETA though as real life and other witting projects have been getting in the way.

I will be using part of the story though to explore Colby's half of the D/s equations. For the most part he has convinced himself he's only doing it for Charlie, very much denying and fearing the pleasure he gets from it himself. So hopefully that will turn out interesting.

I may also be using one of the OCs to look at how the after effects of abuse can effect that kind of relationship.

At any rate thank you for all the nice things you said. Since Whitman 5 might take a while I hope you'll have the chance to look around at my other work. Possibly not quite as epic or deep as this series but they might help pass the time. :)

I've just stumbled across this fic today via the weird pathways of the internet, and I read it in one go, while I should be studying for finals, and I am still in awe. this was one of the best things I've read in a while, it pushed just about every button I have and had me in tears more than once

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Tell your friends, spread the word but first go study ;-) And good luck.

We bow down to you.
I just finshed it,and now i'm off to write the paper I
should have been writing insted of reading this, but once that's done, I will be back to read all your other work, (posibly even the ones in fandoms I don't know) That is how good this is. I also discovered that I can no longer get my elbows to touch, which I used to be able to do, sigh.
ladygray99ladygray99 on February 2nd, 2010 04:48 am (UTC)
Thank you very much. I'm kind of amazed at the number of people who have tried the elbow thing. I'd hate to be responsible for a bad mark so get on that paper but I look forward to seeing you around. If you liked this you might like the silk pillow 'verse.

Hey, it's been a while...you are still going to post the newest one right?
ladygray99ladygray99 on February 5th, 2010 10:17 pm (UTC)
Still working on it. It'll be 300k+ so cut me a little slack.

I have read this several times now, and thought I should finally review. I absolutely love this fic, and am eagerly anticipating more.

Thank you very much. More is being worked on but it's going to take a while. Sorry.

I've read this story almost in one go, and enjoyed it a lot.
BDSM stories are not my favorite ones, but this one is wonderfully written and full of love.
I'm waiting for the continuation, because i'm sure it will be as good as what you have already given us.

I've read so good fanfic about Charly/Colby, that it is getting one of my most loved pairings.
ladygray99ladygray99 on March 5th, 2010 03:04 am (UTC)
Think you. I'm glad you liked it even if it isn't your usual thing. I am working on the next one and I'll hope to see you then. I've got some more Charlie/Colby hanging around if you want something else to read in the mean time.
